1928 Silver Dollar

The 1928 one dollar silver certificate is common with around 640 million printed. Each note has a blue seal on the left side. In general, this silver certificate will not be worth much, but there are some rare varieties that can be quite valuable.

These were the first notes to be called funnybacks. The reason they are called funnybacks is because of the unique design on the back of the bill. The word 'one' is printed in a 'funny' font that is quite different from anything ever printed on a bill. This nickname is not exclusive to the 1928 series, as the 1934 one dollar silver certificate bills have the same back design so they are also known as funnybacks.

1928 Peace Dollar The Peace Dollar silver coin is one of the most regarded coins ever produced by the U.S. Due to the fact that these silver coins were only minted in limited quantities and for only a small number of years, serious coin collectors may want to get their hands on coins from every year they were minted. The 1928-P Peace dollar is a well-known Peace dollar rarity. In fact, it has the lowest mintage of any coin in the entire series at some 360,649 pieces. Even when circulated, this date brings in a significant premium to bullion value. Unfortunately quality was a problem with this issue, and many are weakly struck with mediocre luster. Silver dollar production at the Philadelphia Mint in 1928 took place only between April 13 and 20, with the last silver dollars required to be coined under the act struck on the latter date. A production gap of five years followed, with the next Peace Dollars in the series not produced until 1934. 1928 Peace Silver Dollar Value A rare year, 1928 Peace silver dollar value starts at. $31.49 for those struck at the San Francisco mint. However a quick look at the value chart shows the Philadelphia issue is exceptionally scarce. Although the 1928-S Peace dollar has a mintage nearly 5 times as large as it's Philadelphia counterpart, the 1928-S is much rarer in higher grade. In fact, this issue is often seen with such weak strikes that grades of MS65 and above are almost three times rarer than the Philly issue.

1928 Peace dollars are decidedly scarce, with the 1928 Philadelphia silver dollar taking the cake on rare Peace dollar classifications. In fact, the 1928 Peace dollar is considered the key date for the Peace dollar series. Only 360,649 Peace dollars were made at the Philadelphia mint in 1928, which makes it even scarcer in terms of original mintage than even the famed 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln cent. In fact, in a grace of VF-20, the 1928 Peace dollar has an approximate value of $500.

What does all this mean for the coin collector? Be careful when you’re buying a 1928 Peace dollar, as there are plenty of forgeries on the market, many of which are well disguised. Always buy any 1928 Peace dollar in a slab from a well-regarded third-party coin grading company. Remember, this is a $500 coin in the lower-circulated grades and $1,000 and up in the mid-range uncirculated grades, so be sure to spend your money wisely!

No Peace dollars would be struck until 1934.
